William F. McGee is an educator, performer, activist, trumpeter, hip hop icon and grandfather. A fourth generation HBCU graduate and the son of a professor, Bill McGee was literally raised on HBCU college campuses. A professional musician since he was seventeen years old, Bill has played and recorded with many of the Icons of popular music. As a student at Virginia State, Bill co-founded the band Trussel, who had the hit record “Love Injection”. This HBCU based group regularly competed with groups like the Commodores, Brick and the Blackbyrds. After college Bill went on to record as lead trumpet with Grand Master Flash and the Furious Five. The first Rap group inducted in The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, and The Sugar Hill Gang. He was awarded two gold records for his pioneering work in Hip Hop. He has also recorded with legends like the O’Jays, Patti Labelle, and the Stylistics. Bill has had several charted hits including the Top 20 Billboard hit, Watermelon and Cantaloupe: a Tribute to Herbie Hancock as an artist. He has been a voting member of the recording academy (Grammys) for fifteen years. In addition to being an popular recording artist and multi-instrumentalist, Bill is known as an accomplished arranger, he is also an experienced recording and mastering engineer.
Bill McGee is a former School administrator having worked in the urban school systems of Petersburg and Richmond, Virginia. He is an ordained minister and the President of the Richmond Chapter of The Southern Christian Leadership Conference.
At Virginia State University Bill McGee teaches a variety of music classes. He attended Morris Brown College, has a B.Mus. from Virginia State University, an M.Ed. from Norfolk State University and additional study at William and Mary and The University of Richmond.
