Virginia State University’s Greater Scholarship Gala Raises More Than $1 Million To Support Student Scholarships

The Gala was one of the most significant fundraising events in the University’s history.
Virginia State University’s Greater Scholarship Gala, held on April 25, 2026, was an unforgettable evening of celebration and generosity, raising more than $1 million for student scholarships, making it one of the most significant fundraising events in the University’s history.
The signature black-tie event, sponsored by the Virginia State University Foundation, marked a milestone in celebrating President Makola M. Abdullah’s decade of leadership and showcasing the community’s support for students.
The Gala was attended by VSU leadership, faculty, staff, students, alumni, loyal friends of the University, and representatives from approximately 60 sponsors who contributed to the event’s fundraising success. Among the distinguished guests was former Virginia Governor L. Douglas Wilder, who delivered remarks to begin the evening.
“Unlike in sports, you don’t always know if people think you are winning or losing,” said President Makola M. Abdullah. “Sometimes you think you’re winning, but you don’t know if others see it that way. It’s nice to know, with an event like this, that you all think Virginia State University is winning.”
One of the night’s signature moments was President Abdullah’s performance alongside the legendary group Boyz II Men, bringing the audience to its feet. A video of the performance is available on the University’s Facebook page.

In addition to an electrifying performance, the evening featured significant acts of generosity, including scholarship commitments of $100,000 or more from VSU alumnus and board member Dennis L. Via, a distinguished retired U.S. Army four-star general, and Rev. Dr. Kenneth D. Cooper, senior pastor of Spring Creek Baptist Church, as well as major contributions from corporate partners including Southern Company, Thompson Hospitality, ABM Industries, the Virginia State University Foundation, and the family of Dr. Shobha Sriharan. The overwhelming turnout and generosity displayed at the Gala are a testament to the strength of the VSU community and its unwavering dedication to student achievement and future success. Moving forward, the University will continue to explore impactful ways to expand access and opportunity for its students.
