Virginia State University Welcomes New Dean To Lead The College Of Education

Dr. Gerrelyn Patterson brings more than 25 years of experience preparing teachers, developing academic programs, and empowering future education leaders.

Virginia State University has appointed Dr. Gerrelyn Patterson as Dean of the College of Education. Dr. Patterson brings more than 25 years of experience in P–12 and higher education, with a career dedicated to strengthening academic programs, supporting faculty, and developing the next generation of teachers and educational leaders.

Before joining Virginia State University, Dr. Patterson served as Chair of the Department of Educator Preparation at North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University, where she was the chief academic and administrative leader of the College of Education's largest department. In that role, she oversaw undergraduate and graduate teacher education programs while leading strategic initiatives that advanced educator preparation through innovative program development, transformative partnerships, faculty leadership, and a steadfast commitment to student success.

Throughout her career, Patterson has expanded pathways into the teaching profession through collaborative leadership, innovative program development, strategic partnerships, and externally funded initiatives that enhance academic quality and create new opportunities for aspiring educators.

The University welcomes Dr. Patterson to VSU and the College of Education. She will assume her new role on August 10, 2026.
