Virginia State University Awards Dr. Emmanuel Omojokun Honorary Doctorate For 37 Years Of Transformative Service

From bringing internet connectivity to campus to establishing the Center for Entrepreneurship, Dr. Omojokun has helped shape and advance the VSU mission through visionary leadership and unwavering dedication.

Dr. Emmanuel Omojokun was awarded an Honorary Doctorate at Virginia State University’s Spring 2026 Commencement, one of the institution’s highest distinctions reserved for individuals who have made significant, lasting impacts on the University and its mission. This was a fitting send-off before Dr. Omojokun retires from the University effective July 1, 2026, following 37 years of service to VSU.

Additionally, for his exceptional leadership and steadfast commitment to academic excellence throughout his tenure, Dr. Omojokun has been awarded the titles of Dean Emeritus, Professor Emeritus, and Distinguished Professor.

“I am deeply honored and humbled to receive these recognitions from Virginia State University,” said Dr. Omojokun. “Over the past 37 years, it has been a privilege to serve VSU and its students while helping advance academic excellence, innovation, and student success. I know that VSU will continue empowering future generations to achieve their dreams and make meaningful contributions to society, continuing to show that Greater Happens Here.”

After joining the Trojan family in 1989, Dr. Omojokun became one of the most distinguished educators and leaders in University history. He rose through the ranks from Assistant Professor to Full Professor, Department Chair, Associate Dean, and Dean of the Reginald F. Lewis College of Business, a position he has held since 2014.

Under his leadership, the College of Business has experienced remarkable growth, including a 75% increase in student enrollment over the past five years. In 2015, he established the VSU Center for Entrepreneurship, which continues to train and support aspiring entrepreneurs and local small businesses across the Richmond metro area.

He also founded VSU’s Computer Science program in 1994, creating the curriculum and teaching every course during its first year. He later helped establish the Cybersecurity and Forensics minor and launched the Master of Business Administration (MBA) program in 2024, expanding opportunities for business education and professional advancement at VSU.

Beyond academics, Dr. Omojokun helped modernize the University by bringing internet connectivity to campus, developing the first VSU website, and designing the University’s first local computer network.

In his latest act of service and generosity, he established a $25,000 endowment in 2026 to further expand opportunities for students. Thanks to gifts from members of the VSU community, that endowment increased to more than $37,000, matching his years of service to the University.

Virginia State University owes a debt of gratitude to Dr. Omojokun for his transformative impact that exemplifies how Greater Happens Here.
