Dr. Derrick Scott To Step Down As Dean At Virginia State University

Scott, a VSU alum, has been appointed Provost at Fort Valley State University.

Today, Virginia State University (VSU) announced that Dr. Derrick Scott, Dean of the College of Natural and Health Sciences and Interim Dean of the College of Agriculture, will step down from his roles at VSU to assume the position of Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs at Fort Valley State University (FVSU).

During his tenure at VSU, Dr. Scott brought dynamic leadership, innovation, and a commitment to academic excellence. Under his guidance, the College of Natural and Health Sciences saw record growth in research initiatives, student engagement, and community partnerships. Dr. Scott’s efforts helped elevate the university’s profile in STEM and health-related fields, and he has been instrumental in expanding interdisciplinary programs and securing critical funding for academic development.

"Dr. Scott has been a transformative leader at Virginia State University," said Dr. Makola M. Abdullah, President of VSU. "While we are saddened to see him go, we are incredibly proud of his continued ascent in higher education leadership. And we are proud that his journey to GREATER began at Virginia State University. Fort Valley State is gaining an exceptional academic visionary."

"I am deeply grateful for my time at my alma mater, Virginia State University,” said Dr. Scott. “It has been a privilege to work with such dedicated faculty, staff, and students, and VSU will always be home to me. I look forward to this new chapter at Fort Valley State University and the opportunity to further champion academic excellence."

At FVSU, Dr. Scott will serve as the university’s chief academic officer, overseeing all academic programs, faculty affairs, and student success initiatives. His new role will allow him to continue his mission of shaping inclusive, innovative, and impactful academic environments. Dr. Scott’s last day at VSU will be June 30, 2025.
