Virginia State University To Award An Honorary Degree To The Campus Police Officer Severely Injured In The Line Of Duty

VSU Officer Bruce Foster will receive the degree at Saturday's Commencement.

Virginia State University Police Officer Bruce Foster will be awarded an honorary degree from the University at the Spring 2024 Commencement on Saturday, May 11. Last semester, Officer Foster was paralyzed from the waist down during a shooting that occurred on campus, showing immense bravery and courage while protecting the VSU community. Officer Foster's story is one of resilience and selflessness. His acts of heroism and selflessness have earned him the respect and admiration of the entire VSU community. During his five years of service, Officer Foster has exemplified unwavering dedication and commitment to justice, public safety, and community well-being.

"Officer Foster's selfless actions and unfaltering dedication to protecting our campus make him a true hero," said VSU President Dr. Makola M. Abdullah. "We are honored to award him with an honorary degree in recognition of his outstanding character and bravery. He is an inspiration to us all, and we are grateful to have him as a part of the VSU family."

In addition to Officer Foster, former VSU archivist Lucious Edwards Jr will receive an honorary degree from the University. Edwards served in the role from 1977 until his retirement in 2013. He also served as an adjunct faculty member and leader of multiple institutional committees, underlining his devotion to teaching and commitment to preserving and upholding the mission of VSU.

VSU will hold two commencement ceremonies this spring inside the Multipurpose Center, with the first starting at 9:00 am and the second at 2:00 pm. Officer Foster and Edwards will be awarded their honorary degrees at the first ceremony.
