Sexual Assault Awareness

Sexual assaults are among the most common violent crimes that occur on college campuses. Women ages 16 to 24 experience rape at rates four times higher than the rape of all women. This makes college (and high school) years the most vulnerable for young women.

The VSU Police Department strives to provide a safe environment for our students. We have installed emergency call boxes throughout the campus to provide a direct link to the Department of Police and Public Safety. We have implemented sexual assault programs which include:

Rap Aggression Defense System

Developed to enhance the options of self-defense so that they may become considerations if a woman is attacked. Our department has three certified R.A.D. instructors. The course requires a ten-hour commitment and is free of Charge.

PERSONAL SAFETY AWARENESS PROGRAM
is designed to assist women and men in identifying and avoiding potential situations that could lead to a sexual or physical assault. The program is presented in conjunction with the VSU Office of Sexual Assault and Alcohol/Substance Abuse.

SEXUAL ASSAULT SEMINARS
are presented to dormitory residents, athletes, fraternities, sororities, and other organizations on campus. These seminars provide a wealth of information on preventing or reducing the probability that a sexual predator will victimize a person. The presentation also answers questions and address myths about sexual assaults and the consequences.

BROCHURES AND PAMPHLETS
are distributed during seminars. They are available during displays and can also be obtained from the campus police department.
