As you plan for an exciting week, you may have questions about Homecoming and its procedures. So, to ensure you're fully prepared for this unforgettable experience, we've compiled answers to some of the most common inquiries. Let’s make this Homecoming 2024, The HILL UNLEASHED, the best one yet!

VSU Homecoming 2024 FAQs

Homecoming is a weeklong tradition at VSU that will begin Saturday, October 5, and run through Saturday, October 12. The week will be jam-packed with events open to students, alumni, and the public. View the full schedule of events.

This year’s Homecoming game will be against Bowie State University on Saturday, October 12, starting at 2:00 pm. Purchase tickets online. Tickets can also be purchased in person at the Multi-Purpose Center box office Monday through Friday from 11:00 am to 5:00 pm.

We are excited to announce that the VSU Homecoming Parade is back in full force. After being scaled down due to the closure of the Appomattox River Canal Bridge last year, the parade is returning to its usual route in 2024 and will feature 20 bands and 41 parade units. View the parade route here. The parade is free and open to the public.

Every year, we are excited to welcome back all of our alums planning to participate in Homecoming. Once again, there will be opportunities to reconnect with old friends, recapture fond memories, and hear campus updates from the VSU Administration. View Homecoming activities that will be available to alumni.

The event is on Saturday, October 12, 2024, from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. inside the VSU Multi-Purpose Center. Regular tailgating will be held on the field next to the VSU Multipurpose Center along Third Avenue. If you have registered for the event, your name will be on the list at check-in located at the front entrance of the MPC. No tickets will be sold on the day of the event!

As always, there will be a strong police presence around campus throughout Homecoming Week. We will utilize police resources from all of the area jurisdictions as well as private security companies. However, safety is an active and shared responsibility. There will be safety measures and protocols in place, but EVERY individual plays a critical role in protecting their safety as well as the safety of others. If you notice any suspicious or criminal activities or other emergencies on our campus, report them to the Virginia State University Police Department immediately at (804) 524-5411.

Additionally, we have created the following safety video that all Homecoming participants should view before attending.

VSU Homecomings traditionally draw enormous crowds. We expect thousands of participants to attend the events during Homecoming Week. All students, faculty, staff, alums, and members of the community planning to attend Homecoming are encouraged to arrive earlier than usual due to expected traffic delays. Bring your patience.

Both paid and free parking options are available for Homecoming. Paid parking is $20 per vehicle and will be available on campus and at the VSU Multi-Purpose Center (MPC) until the lots are full. Only electronic forms of parking payment will be accepted. VSU students, faculty, and staff with a 2024-25 Parking decal are NOT required to pay for parking. Free parking will be available at Ettrick Elementary School on a first-come, first-serve basis. Any other outside parking is at your own risk.

Handicap parking will be available in the lot to the right of the L. Douglas Wilder Building (Lot #32) and in the lot behind the Hunter McDaniel Building (Lot #14). This is considered paid parking and you must have an up-to-date handicap placard to use these lots. Those spaces are also on a first-come, first-serve basis.

VSU has instituted a clear bag policy for home football games at Rogers Stadium and VSU Multipurpose Center Events. Bags must be clear plastic, vinyl or PVC and cannot exceed 12″ x 6″ x 12″ or clear one-gallon plastic freezer bags (Ziploc bag or similar) are also permitted. Small clutch bags/wallets no larger than 4.5″ x 6.5″ (with or without a handle or strap) can be taken into the stadium or arena and will be subject to search. An exception will be made for items necessary for medical reasons after proper inspections at a gate designated for this purpose.

Restroom facilities will be located at different spots around campus during Homecoming. View the map of those restroom locations.

Homecoming attendees can continue tailgating on Saturday, October 12, until dusk (around 6:30 pm). After that, we ask people who are not students to please leave campus.
