Virginia State University (VSU) invites applications for the position of Dean for the College of Natural and Health Sciences. The Dean of the College of Natural and Health Sciences is a 12-month administrative appointment reporting directly to the Provost/Senior Vice President for Academic and Student Affairs. The Dean is a member of the Council of the Deans and President’s Cabinet. The College is comprised of four academic Departments: Department of Biology, Department of Chemistry, Department of Nursing, and the Department of Psychology. As the chief academic officer for the college, the Dean is responsible for all academic programs, fiscal resources, and personnel within the College; provides the leadership to support faculty and staff development; ensures graduate and undergraduate program innovation and excellence; and facilitates faculty research and sponsored program enhancement. The Dean is charged with the administration of university and college policies and regulations adopted by the Board of Visitors, the Office of the Provost, the Faculty Senate, and the college faculty, the Dean’s role is central to facilitating best practices to foster collaboration across key stakeholders. More explicitly, these duties and responsibilities include (but are not limited to):

  • Administration of all the operations of the College;
  • Maintaining accreditation; strategic planning and program effectiveness;
  • Development, assessment and implementation of curricula and academic programs;
  • Maintain a strong record of assessment by disseminating and using data in decision making.
  • Provide leadership and vision for the college, while overseeing all personnel matters involving  academic and academic-support personnel including: recruitment, retention, appointments, evaluation, tenure, promotion, faculty workloads, and long-range professional development plans;
  • Create an atmosphere conducive to scholarly pursuits by supporting faculty in teaching, service and scholarship;
  • Collaborate with other Deans and the Office of the Provost to advance academic priorities;
  • Serves as a supporter and advocate for the Natural and Health Sciences areas via nurturing and advancing external partnerships and collaborations that serve students and college;
  • Procure external grant and private funding support for departments and the college;
  • Remain current with the various concepts, practices and procedures that respond to evolving needs;
  • Execute data-driven decisions to plan and accomplish goals with a wide variety of creativity and latitude;
  • Review and update (on a regular basis) academic protocols, procedures and initiatives to ensure alignment with the University’s mission.


An earned doctoral degree from a regionally accredited institution in a discipline offered within the College of Natural and Health Sciences;

  • Evidence of a history of scholarly research, based on an established research agenda, that includes refereed articles and funded grants suitable for appointment as a tenured professor within a discipline appropriate to the College
  • Administrative experience in higher education, including management of complex budgets and supervision of personnel;
  • Commitment to assessment-based program development and data-driven decision making;
  • Record of successful outreach into the community including outreach to schools, foundations, and/or business organizations;
  • Understanding of and commitment to issues related to diversity;
  • Demonstrated ability as an advocate in educational and legislative environments;
  • Commitment to shared governance and participation of all stakeholders for quality professional education programs;
  • Demonstrated knowledge of the importance of technology in education programs including distance learning;
  • Excellent oral, written and interpersonal communication skills.


The successful candidate will be committed to the mission of the University and the leadership of the President and Provost, and demonstrate the following:

  • Thorough knowledge of, and experience with generally accepted University academic policies, procedures and operations
  • Proven skills in leadership, relationship building, and program development as well as a strong commitment to and understanding of the dynamics of a multi-ethnic, diverse institution of higher education, valuing the ideas and contributions of others;
  • Personal attributes such as collegiality, adaptability, resourcefulness, and the ability to concurrently and effectively manage multiple tasks;
  • Active participation in professional associations involving academics and related disciplines.
  • Ability to conduct research and synthesize results to produce qualitative and quantitative reports.
