Associate Director - TRiO Student Support Services


Virginia State University is seeking qualified candidates to apply for the Associate Director of TRIO Student Support Services. This is a full-time, 12-month, federal grant funded position with leadership and administrative assistance of all SSS grant operations.  Position reports to the Interim Associate Vice President for Student Success and Engagement/Executive Director of TRIO Programs.  As a pre-condition of employment, the applicant must be authorized to work in the United States.   

Responsibilities include:

Implementation and day-to-day operations of the SSS program including, but not limited to: planning, administering and the supervision of professional and support staff; maintaining a participant caseload of at least 40%; establish and maintain internal partnerships with the campus to recruit new students to the program, assist with supportive services and ensure the success of VSU SSS participants;  serve as the liaison to faculty, and staff of the university about SSS participants and program initiatives; develop and disseminate informational materials about the SSS program and communicate project services; oversee recruitment of 140 program participants annually and assist with the final selection and admissions process to the program; supervise staff efforts to ensure that activities and services are provided according to the legislation and regulations of the U.S. Department of Education and that lead to meeting program objectives; assist with the submission of the US Department of Educations’ Annual Performance Report, (APR); assist with conducting academic needs assessments for all new SSS participants in collaboration with other program staff and coordinate appropriate interventions through services such as academic instruction or tutoring; assist with notifying instructors and collection/documentation attendance, progress reports, and evaluations; provide personal, career, financial, and academic counseling to SSS participants per approved objectives; develop and administer tracking systems for all program participants; maintain accurate records of participants’ eligibility, participation, and academic progress; authorize the commitment and expenditure of all program funds in accordance with the regulations of the U.S. Department of Education; and other duties as assigned.  

Required qualifications include:  

Minimum of three (3) years experience in the areas of staff supervision, budget management, program development and evaluation, reporting, and compliance with federal regulations. Minimum of five (5) years experience with federal TRIO programs, academic support programs, or similar programs for disadvantaged college students. Master’s degree in education, counseling, or related field is required; demonstrated ability to work and communicate effectively with people of diverse backgrounds; must be capable of working a flexible schedule to include evenings, weekends and some travel; and possess effective decision making, problem solving and communication skills (oral and written).  Preference will be given to individuals who have succeeded in overcoming barriers similar to those confronting the SSS target population.
