Virginia State University (VSU) seeks applicants for Resident Director for the Department of Residence Life and Housing. The successful candidate will be responsible for overall administration and operations of one or two residence halls consisting of 50 - 500 students.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
The Resident Director (RD) reports to the Director of Residence Life and Housing, and will be responsible for the selection, training and supervision of student staff (Resident Assistants (RAs), Office Assistants (OAs), Graduate Assistant (GA), and other student staff within the department, coordinating programming, promoting community development, advising hall council and/or RHA, addressing student conduct, crisis response and management, and overall administration and operations of one or two residence halls consisting of 50 - 500 students.
Programs and operations should foster learning and developmental opportunities for an individual student and an entire community. Participate in the on-call rotation for after-hours emergencies. In addition to fulfilling department and division responsibilities, the RC will serve the University through special projects and committee work. As a professional member of the Residence Life and Housing team, the RC will work to advance the mission of the department. The RC must have the ability and desire to work in a team-oriented environment, and establish positive relationships with campus colleagues. This is a 12- month live-off position.
Bachelor's degree or any combination of education, experiences and training. Experience working with young adults in an educational setting. Demonstrated analytical, written and oral communication, and interpersonal skills. Attention to detail. Ability and willingness to work within a fast paced, student-centered environment. Commitment to diversity and demonstrated ability to work with diverse persons. Experience with MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and similar computer programs.
Candidate will move between and within the Residence Halls and may periodically require lifting up to 50 pounds. Working knowledge of the principles of student counseling, housing and business management of a residence hall; knowledge of university/college policies related to student services and of safety and environmental principles in a residential setting. Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively in writing and orally with students and parents; able to maintain relationships with people of different backgrounds who have diverse needs; able to supervise of the work of others and to evaluate the effectiveness of services being provided and to initiate appropriate change when necessary; the ability to work with a variety of students and gain their support and cooperation along with the ability to supervise and work effectively with professional and non-professional personnel.
Master's degree in Student Personnel, Higher Education Administration, MBA or related field. Supervisory, event planning, marketing/advertising, budgeting and crisis response experience. Knowledge of student development, leadership and/or learning theory, and demonstrated ability to use student development and learning theory to guide practice. Evidence of creative problem solving, knowledge of FERPA issues related to the position, prior training in NIMS, CERT, and other safety and crisis response procedures. Experience with web design and marketing using various forms of media.
