Dr. Carol Hill joined VSU in August 2024. She serves as Adjunct Assistant Professor of Voice and Music Ed (Elementary Methods). She was born and raised in Lynchburg, VA, graduating with a BA in Voice and Music Education from Lynchburg College (now, University of Lynchburg). She earned the Master of Church Music (emphasis in voice, church music, and music theory), and the Doctor of Music Ministry (emphasis in voice, music drama, and hymnology) from The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, KY. More recently, she graduated from Shenandoah University with her Doctor of Musical Arts in Vocal Performance. Dr. Hill has been a music professor in several universities, and has served as Minister of Music in churches over the years (she is an ordained minister). She recently retired (July 2024) after ten years in elementary music (K-5) at Patrick Copeland Elementary School in Hopewell, VA.
Dr. Hill and her talented husband, David, served as missionaries for 15 years, 1986-2002, assigned as music professors at the Equatorial Baptist Theological Seminary in Belem, Para, Brazil. Both of their sons were born in Belem, Brazil.
Dr. Hill is often invited as a vocal soloist with community and church choirs, and enjoys participating in the VA Baptist Women’s Chorale (having recently served as its director for six years). She is currently serving as Worship Leader of the Traditional Service at Winfree Memorial Baptist Church in Midlothian. She has several side interests, one of which is musical theater, both on stage or in the pit as the music director/pianist or clarinet. Another side interest is history, and starting in 2023, she is working as a Historical Interpreter/Gift Shop at Berkeley Plantation in Charles City County.
When Dr. Hill was in high school participating in All-District Chorus, she had the wonderful opportunity of meeting Undine Smith Moore.
