Charles Spurlock was born and raised in Hanover County, Virginia. He showed a natural interest in music at a very early age and began taking piano lessons at the age of nine. Charles directed his choir and played his first church service at the age of fourteen, planting the seeds for the rest of his music career. He graduated from Hanover High School and then attended Christopher Newport University. While at CNU he was one of the winners of the Concerto/Aria Competition, and received the opportunity to perform a piano concerto with the CNU orchestra. He obtained a Bachelor of Music degree with a concentration in Piano Performance. After receiving his Bachelor’s degree, he continued his studies at George Mason University and received a Masters in music degree with a concentration in Piano Performance.

In recent years, Charles has served as the staff accompanist for Hanover High School and New Kent High School. He has done work with the Richmond Symphony with the Richard Smallwood tribute, as well as the Roanoke Symphony. Charles currently serves as the Music Director at Mount Olive Baptist Church in Glen Allen, Virginia, and has been with them since 2017. Charles joined the Virginia State University Music Department in fall of 2024 as one of the department’s staff accompanists. He plays for the VSU Concert Choir and accompanies the vocal studios of Dr. Craig Robertson, Dr. Danielle Watson, and Dr. Carol Hill.  Charles’ primary goal is to continue developing his gifts and sharing those gifts with the people in his life.
