DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

The Cooperative Extension Specialist/Assistant/Associate Professor of Forestry in the College of Agriculture at Virginia State University (VSU) will provide leadership and coordination in developing, implementing, and maintaining an effective and integrated Forestry Program, including research, extension, and teaching (academics). Virginia State University has identified three thematic focal areas for forestry-related work, in order to best serve its stakeholders and complement efforts at other institutions in the state.  These are: urban and interface forestry, small woodlot forestry, and alternative forest production systems (such as agroforestry and Silviculture). The successful candidate will collaborate closely with Faculty and staff at VSU and with applicable Extension Specialists, Agents, and others in Virginia Cooperative Extension.  The successful candidate will also collaborate with partners in other organizations to develop research, academic, and extension programs as appropriate and feasible.  Initial emphasis of the position will be on enhancing forestry research and Extension programming at the University. The Extension Specialist-Assistant Professor of Forestry will lead and coordinate multidisciplinary research teams. He/she will conduct research related to forest management and related areas. The successful candidate is expected to seek external funding in support of the Forestry Program.  The successful candidate will provide expertise and assistance for forest management (including alternative and urban/interface forest management, as relevant) to a statewide audience. He/she will develop, coordinate, and deliver outreach activities to diverse stakeholders, using a variety of educational techniques.  The successful candidate will support teaching in the area of natural resource management including forestry and will assist to strengthen the academic program in the area of natural resources.

 

QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum of a Master's Degree in Forestry or closely plant sciences field is required. Preference will be given to applicants holding a Ph.D. in Forestry or a related plant science discipline.  A minimum of two successful years of post-master's experience in forestry, forestry-related research, Extension, and/ or teaching at the college level.  Preference will be given to candidates holding a degree from a program accredited by the Society of American Foresters.  Candidates should possess a knowledge of forestry issues and practices in Virginia and/or the US Southeast; considerable knowledge of at least one of the following areas, and working knowledge of the other two (Private forest management, urban/interface forest management, agroforestry); demonstrated experience in conducting research in urban forestry, general forestry, or agroforestry, with a proven track-record of peer-reviewed publication.  Additionally, the successful candidate must demonstrate the ability to secure and manage grant funding and disseminate information through the use of varied educational activities.  Individual must have a personal commitment to working with diverse clientele and experience working with such audiences.   Excellent communication and interpersonal skills and the willingness to work in research, extension, and academics both independently and collaboratively.  Demonstrated ability to work productively with others in a team approach, including collaborating with peers and effectively leading subordinates.   Preference will be given to applicants holding a Ph.D. in Forestry or a related plant science discipline.   Preference will be given to candidates holding a degree from a program accredited by the Society of American Foresters.
