Agricultural Research Station at Virginia State University (VSU) invites applications for a Research Associate or Postdoctoral Fellow position. This is a non-faculty exempt, 100% research position with 12-month appointment renewable depending upon performance. The successful candidate will be a highly self-motivated team member of the established and nationally-recognized soybean/edamame breeding program. He/she will work independently and cooperatively with the project leader, research manager/specialists, students and collaborators. 

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

The major responsibility is to implement a research project that is funded by USDA-NIFA CBG grant for three years. The individual will conduct research on soybean/edamame breeding and genetics, assist and report to the project leader in all aspects of the research program. The research will involve characterization of quality (protein, oil, fatty acids, amino acids, etc.), resistance, agronomic and yield traits; evaluation and selection of promising lines; identification of molecular markers associated with target traits; and application of novel technologies to variety improvement. The duties include but not limited to experiment design and implement, data collection and analysis, result presentation and publication, and participation in grant proposal writing. Coordination of research activities and supervision of students and hourly employees are also expected.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

PhD in plant breeding and genetics or related fields, or MSc with equivalent ability and experience of at least three years of work experience in the field is required. The incumbent should have received extensive training and have hands-on experience in applied and basic research, experimental design and implementation, laboratory experiments and field trials, data collection and statistical analysis, QTL mapping, GWAS and DNA marker application, effective communication skills in both verbal and written English. Experience in soybean research and demonstrated ability in scientific publication will be plus.
