Extension Specialist, 4-H and Youth Development

The School of Agriculture, Cooperative Extension at Virginia State University is seeking a 4-H and Youth Development Specialist to provide leadership and strategic visioning/planning for program design and development, implementation and evaluation relating to positive 4-H and youth development and volunteerism in the areas of Leadership, Citizenship and Civic Engagement. The incumbent will have an appointment in Extension, with an opportunity to teach and/or conduct research upon their request or upon the instructional needs within the College of Agriculture.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Outreach and Education
The Extension Specialist will engage in outreach to diverse racial and ethnic populations with special emphasis on undeserved, socioeconomically disadvantaged youth and communities.
The Extension Specialist will develop instructional materials and provide informal instruction for youth/adult partners/clientele, including Extension educators/agents, through a demonstrated commitment to diversity in programming. The incumbent will assist with the Virginia Association of Adult 4-H Volunteers, District 4-H Agents, and the Educational Design Team Subcommittee Programming and Evaluation, as appropriate; provide support for State 4-H Intermediate Congress; and participate in State 4-H staff meetings.
Leadership Development, Citizenship, and Civic Engagement
The Extension Specialist will endeavor to broaden the exposure and understanding of youth and volunteers as to their involvement and critical role in positive leadership development, citizenship, civic engagement and the positive image of 4-H, while emphasizing the contributions of 4-H in both rural and urban areas.
Funding to Enhance Organizational Capacity
The Extension Specialist will seek external funding to support educational programs and to enhance organizational capacity.
Support for Collaborative Work
The Extension Specialist must travel to provide support to counties, to participate in the collaborative work with various state and federal Extension committees and organizations and to attend national meetings and conferences for professional development. The incumbent must conduct scholarly works and contribute to extension publications, articles, bulletins, and scientific journals. Additionally, the incumbent will provide technical assistance and establish new collaborative networks to address problems relevant to limited-resource audiences.
The successful candidate must hold an earned doctorate, with at least one graduate degree in agriculture, education, youth/child development, program management, sociology/social work or a related field from a regionally accredited institution. Possess the academic credentials, subject matter expertise and ability to conduct classroom instruction in one or more of the aforementioned disciplines. Must demonstrate knowledge and experience in planning, conducting and evaluating participatory Extension or non-formal education programs in leadership, citizenship, civic engagement and volunteer development with special emphasis on at-risk youth programming. Possess excellent written and oral communication skills. Possess a working knowledge of the pedagogies associated with positive youth development; and be skilled in the use of information technology and social media as to the delivery of effective age appropriate educational programs.
