Extension Specialist, 4-H STEAM and Youth Development

The School of Agriculture, Cooperative Extension at Virginia State University is seeking a 4-H STEAM and Youth Development Specialist to provide programming which will assist youth in their exploration and understanding of STEAM related fields, while promoting the integration and interaction of science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics in the environmental and agricultural sciences. The incumbent will also provide relevant expertise and training to assist other units within Cooperative Extension; i.e. urban and sustainable agriculture, small fruits and vegetables, animal science, aquaculture, agribusiness and marketing, health/wellness, children and families, family financial management, and other areas of extension. The position conducts research-based inquiry related to STEAM, youth development, environmental issues and curriculum development; resulting in the delivery of STEAM and environmental science education and outreach programs that collectively promote and increase educational/career awareness and environmental consciousness.
The incumbent will have an appointment in Extension, with an opportunity to teach and/or conduct research upon their request or upon the instructional needs within the College of Agriculture. This is a full-time, 12 month position.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Outreach and Education
The Extension Specialist will engage in STEAM related outreach to diverse racial and ethnic populations with special emphasis on developing leadership characteristics in undeserved, socioeconomically disadvantaged youth and communities. The Extension Specialist will design, develop, implement and evaluate STEAM educational programs and participate in local, regional, and state STEAM related 4-H and other programs.
The STEAM Extension Specialist will use appropriate technologies to plan and deliver programs through workshops, seminars, conferences, one-on-one visits, field trips, and tours.
The incumbent will assist with the Virginia Association of Adult 4-H Volunteers, District 4-H Agents, and the Educational Design Team Subcommittee Programming and Evaluation, as appropriate; provide support for State 4-H Intermediate Congress; and participate in State 4-H staff meetings.
The incumbent will provide leadership for and access to experiences to shape youth’s science, technology, engineering, mathematic and creative skills – STEAMing them into the future – while also teaming them valuable life skills such as problem solving, critical thinking, curiosity, global engagement, managing resources, decision making, and working with others.
Funding to Enhance Organizational Capacity
The Extension Specialist will participate in the development and submission of proposals seeking external funding to support educational programs and to enhance organizational capacity.
Support for Collaborative Work
The Extension Specialist must travel to network and build coalitions with other agencies, organizations, and institutions to provide support to counties, to participate in the collaborative work with various state and federal Extension committees and organizations and to attend national meetings and conferences for professional development. The incumbent must conduct scholarly works and contribute to extension publications, articles, bulletins, and scientific journals. Additionally, the incumbent will provide technical assistance and establish new collaborative networks to address problems relevant to limited-resource audiences.
The successful candidate must hold an earned doctorate in Agricultural Sciences (agricultural education, environmental science, and animal/ plant/soil sciences), Technology (agricultural/bio-systems engineering or engineering technologies) or closely related field from a regionally accredited institution.
Possess the academic credentials, subject matter expertise and ability to conduct classroom instruction in one or more of the aforementioned disciplines. Must demonstrate knowledge and experience in planning, conducting and evaluating participatory Extension or non-formal education programs in STEAM education with a keen interest in its application towards positive 4-H, leadership and youth development.
Possess a working knowledge of the pedagogies associated with positive youth development. Skilled in the use of information technology and social media as to the delivery of effective age appropriate educational programs. Possess excellent written and oral communication skills.
