Tutorial Services

Tutoring is a major component of the Student Support Services Program. Our mission is to assist students in their educational development while they are enrolled at Virginia State University. The tutorial staff wants to help make the road to graduation easier. Tutors do not complete class assignments for students nor they replace instructors. SSS can demonstrate techniques for keeping pace with assignments; and in most cases, tutors can assist with understanding material for specific courses. We can also assist improving skills in studying, taking notes, preparing for tests, and managing time effectively.

Tutorial Services are provided to supplement classroom and laboratory instruction. Class attendance is a prerequisite for tutorial assistance. Educational tools (textbooks, class notes, course outline, etc.) are necessary for effective tutorial assistance.

Tutoring is conducted in small group settings. For students with disabilities, reasonable accommodations will be provided, upon request, on a case-by-case basis. Requests for accommodations require notification in advance to ensure reasonable service.

Tutoring, a major component of the program, is provided by University students (undergraduate and graduate) who are faculty-recommended examples of academic excellence. Tutors are required to attend training sessions that are conducted by University faculty and other professionals. In addition, tutors are assigned to work with faculty advisors to enhance tutorial strategies.

Development of College Survival Skills

Provided by University faculty and staff through group sessions. Students are encouraged to increase knowledge and abilities in time management, goal setting, decision making, note-taking, test taking, interpersonal communication, study skills, career options and basic life skills.

Computer Assisted Instruction is available in several courses for students and tutorial staff.
