GAMMA RHO
Seven young ladies who dedicated
themselves to academic excellence and community service founded Sigma Gamma Rho
Sorority, Inc. on November 12, 1922 at Butler University in Indianapolis,
Indiana. The sorority became an incorporated national collegiate sorority on
December 30, 1929. Their motto is “ Greater Service, Greater Progress. “ Leadership
training programs for teenagers and youth are sponsored at the national and
local levels as means of implementing the national project of the sorority,
which is known as National Youth Projects. These programs are geared around
youth and their development.
The Alpha Zeta Chapter was
founded at Virginia State University in 1936.
Community service activities include participating in the Petersburg
Public Schools Reading Program, sponsoring the Miss Rhomania Pageant in which
pre-teens participate in a variety of activities for social and cultural
development. The colors are royal blue and gold
