Dr. Ernest E. Just (1883-
Ernest
E. Just was born August 14, 1883 in Charleston South Carolina. With
vigor he pursued his work at the Industrial School of State College,
Orangeburg, South Carolina. Through. Though this school did not have
the most modern equipment, the thoroughness and the enthusiasm of the teachers
inspired Ernest Everett, gave him an excellent start, and pointed to him the
direction in which he should go for further training. Because of his early
childhood guidance, he bade his home state goodbye and started North for the
land of fuller educational opportunity.
As
he had been informed of the efficiency leges and universities of the North, he
enrolled at Kimball institution he graduated in 1903 and in the fall entered
Dartmouth College. His record there as usual was outstanding, for when we
graduated from Dartmouth in 1907, he had won the Phi Beta Kappa key, which is
the highest scholastic award a student can receive as an undergraduate. In
the fall of 1907, with the degree of Bachelor of Arts, he joined the faculty of
Howard University as an instructor in biology. He has been with Howard
ever since. He engaged in intensive research and at intervals to do
graduate work at the University of Chicago. In 1915, after Brother Just
had attracted nation-wide attention by unusual brilliancy of research, the
National Association for the Advancement of Colored People conferred upon him
the Spingarn Medal, which each year is given to a Negro who has been most
outstanding in achievement. The following year he received from the
University of Chicago the degree of Doctor of Philosophy.
