Students' academic advisement is a serious matter at Virginia State University because VSU is committed to being a mentoring, nurturing, and caring institution.  Initially, the Office of Orientation and Advisement will provide academic advisement for freshman students who have not yet declared their majors.   All student that have officially declared their major areas of study must seek academic advisement from the academic department in which their major programs are offered.

Orientation

All new students attend New Student Orientation which is designed to introduce them to the University and to help them get an early start towards academic success.  Students meet with faculty, staff and administrators who are eager to help them in this learning process.   They will learn about academic advisement, class registration and student life.

International Students

The Office of Orientation and Advisement serves as the central University contact for undergraduate and graduate international applicants as well as currently enrolled international students.   International students will be advised on immigration regulations, admission requirements, and other matters associated with becoming acclimated to this environment.

Veterans Affairs

Veterans' Affairs at Virginia State University will provide assistance for veterans, service personnel, departments and survivors in obtaining authorized educational benefits as well as meeting their needs in adjusting to University life.  Students who are eligible for educational benefits should contact a certifying official for assistance.  Each year more than one hundred students use theses services.

Persons who are eligible for VA educational benefits and who are planning to enroll should contact the Veterans Affairs Office as soon as possible to ensure sufficient time for the processing of all paperwork.  The processing time for new applicants may be 8 to 10 weeks.

Depending upon the major, basic military training may be substituted for physical activity classes required in the curriculum.  Students should contact departments to see if a substitution can be made.  Students having approval for substitution must successfully complete an equal number of semester hours of electives to fulfill the requirements for graduation.
