Student Telecommunications Services Dormitory Telephone Service Local Telephone Service UTS provides local telephone service in all the dormitory rooms. This service is included in the normal room and board fees for on campus students. There is one active telephone line in each room. If the room is being shared, both students will also share the one telephone line. The student is required to supply a telephone set for their use. We strongly recommend a good quality touch tone telephone set. Cordless phones are frequently used by the students, however we do not recommend their use. Cordless phones operate on radio waves and do not work well in a dormitory setting. They have a strong tendency to become distorted and even pick up other students talking on the telephone. They are not intended for use in a setting with so many active telephone lines in such a small range. Telephone Line Features Along with local telephone service, some line features are also included. They are call forwarding (will only allow you to call forward to on campus numbers), call waiting (must press the switch-hook or flash button and then dial *12 to switch between callers) and call transfer/conference calling. Long Distance, Caller ID and Voice Mail Services UTS also provides students access to make long distance calls from their dormitory room. All students are assigned a long distance pin code when they sign their Telephone Service Agreement form (mandatory requirement from all dormitory students). This code can be used to make a long distance call from their dorm room and is billed to the student at our published per minute rate on a monthly basis. Students do not have to use this pin code for long distance, they may also use any calling card that has an 800 access number. Students will only be billed for long distance if they use the pin code to make long distance calls. Caller ID is a very popular service among the students. It allows the students to identify the caller before they answer the call. It also provides a quick way for them to know who has called in their absence without having to listen to a lot of messages. There is a one-time per academic year installation fee of $25.00 payable at the time of application and a monthly service charge of $10.00 that is billed to the student. Since there is only one telephone line per dormitory room, a student may opt to share this expense with a room mate. As an on-campus student at Virginia State University, you may sign up for this service by filling out the Caller ID Application and returning it to the UTS office. It takes approximately 10 business days for the service to be activated on the line. Voice Mail is another service some students use instead of an answering machine. It allows callers to leave a message so that the student will not miss important phone calls. As with caller-id, there is a one-time per academic year installation fee of $20.00 payable at the time of application and a monthly service charge of $10.00 that is billed to the student. Please check with your room mate before ordering this feature. This feature does not work in conjunction with an answering machine. The charge for this feature can also be shared by room mates. As an on-campus student at Virginia State University, you may sign up for this service by filling out the Voice Mail Application and returning it to the UTS office. This feature also takes approximately 10 business days for the service to be activated on the line. These services when activated are present on the line for both Fall and Spring semesters. If a student leaves during the school year, it is their responsibility to let the UTS office know in writing that they will no longer be on campus and that the service needs to be removed. In order to ensure removal of the features and to keep the charges from accruing on the students account, the Voice Mail/Caller ID Deactivation Form must be completed and returned to the UTS office. Billing - Students are billed on a monthly basis for whatever services in addition to the included local telephone service they use. Our billing periods run from the 28th of the previous month to the 27th of the current month. All bills are due by the 27th of each month for charges associated with the previous month's bill. If previous balances are not paid in full by the 27th, a $5.00 late fee is added to the student's UTS account. Students are required to furnish their own telephone equipment such as a telephone set and Caller ID box if they choose to sign up for this service.
