Dr. Godwin O. Mbagwu serves as Associate Dean for Research, under the Division of Graduate Studies, Research and Outreach at Virginia State University (VSU). In this capacity, he is responsible for the overall administration of the University's Academic Research Office to include the pre-award research operations of the Office of Sponsored Programs and he interacts with external agencies on behalf of the university.

Dr. Mbagwu began his academic career in the Department of Chemistry at VSU, where he was appointed instructor in 1981. Subsequent positions included Assistant Professor, Associate Professor and Professor.

As an active researcher, he has published extensively in major international research journals and was a visiting scientist at the Harvard Medical School, the Massachusetts General Hospital and the Oak Ridge National Laboratories. Dr. Mbagwu serves as a Consultant to various federal government agencies including the National Institutes of Health and the National Science Foundation.

Dr. Mbagwu has been honored by numerous organizations for his significant contributions in his field, including among others, the Academic Research Enhancement Award from the National Cancer Institute/National Institutes of Health, the State of Virginia Council of Higher Education Distinguished Professor of Chemistry Award, the Washington D.C.-based QEM Network National Giant In Science Award and the 2001 prestigious Historical Black Colleges and Universities Faculty Scholar Award in Cancer Research presented by the American Association for Cancer Research.

Dr. Mbagwu 's professional affiliations include the American Association for Cancer Research, American Chemical Society (Medicinal and Organic Chemistry Division), Sigma Xi Scientific Society, Beta Kappa Chi Scientific Society, American Society for Photobiology, Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, and International Photodynamic Association.

Dr. Mbagwu earned the bachelor's degree in chemistry from the University of Nigeria and a doctorate in Organic Chemistry from Virginia Commonwealth University.
