Career and Technical Studies

Programs and curricula in Career and Technical Studies lead to the Master of Education, Master of Science degree or the Certificate of Advanced Graduate Study . Through a careful selection of electives students may choose a focus in agriculture, business, human ecology, industrial education, or general vocational and technical education.

The Career and Technical Studies program is an interdisciplinary curriculum designed to provide post baccalaureate preparation for individuals employed or seeking employment in the vocational and technical education field. The program will meet the personal and professional needs of secondary and community college teachers, cooperative extension agents, local supervisors, and other associated with the vocational education enterprise.

Admission. In addition to the general requirements for admission to the Graduate division of the School of Graduate Studies, Research and Outreach, a minimum of 21 semester hours of undergraduate preparation in an occupational program or related area is required. Undergraduate majors in the following areas will be considered: agriculture, industrial education, family and consumer sciences, business management, administrative systems and management, human ecology, sociology, and associated fields.

Continuation Requirements. Continuation requirements for a degree in Career and Technical Studies adhere to the general requirements for the Graduate division of the School of Graduate Studies, Research and Outreach.

Master of Science (Thesis Option). Candidates for the Master of Science degree must complete a minimum of 30 semester hours, which include 24-27 semester hours of courses plus a thesis of three to six semester hours. The degree will not be granted without a thesis.

Master of Education (Non-Thesis Option). Candidates for the non-thesis option must complete one of the following options:

  1. Thirty semester hours of courses and an internship or practicum of three to six semester hours.
  2. Thirty semester hours of courses plus a project (including action research or other applied techniques).
  3. Thirty-six semester hours of courses.

Exit Requirements. All requirements for the master's degree must be completed within six years from the date of initial registration in the graduate program, excluding periods of military service. Extensions of no more than two years may be granted following a successful appeal to the Committee on Policies and Petitions of the School of Graduate Studies, Research and Outreach.
