Mathematics

The areas of study available in the Mathematics Department lead to the Master of Science or the Master of Education degree. The Master of Science degree may be earned in mathematics or mathematics education.

Admission Requirements

In addition to the requirements for admission to the Graduate School, applicants who wish to pursue degree programs in the Department of Mathematics must meet the following requirements:

  1. For admission to a program leading to the Master of Science degree in Mathematics, the applicant must have an undergraduate degree in mathematics or 20 semester hours of college mathematics including nine semester hours of calculus.
  2. For admission to a program leading to the Master of Education degree in Mathematics Education the applicant must have completed at least six semester hours of calculus.

Program Requirements

Master of Science Degree in Mathematics

In order to qualify for a Master of Science Degree in Mathematics:

  1. The candidate must successfully complete at least 24 semester hours of course work, at least 15 hours of which must be earned in 500-level Mathematics (MATH prefix) courses. In completing this requirement, the candidate should select at least one course from three (3) of the following five (5) areas:
    1. Analysis: MATH 530: Functions of Real Variables, MATH 531: Measure Theory, MATH 533: Functional Analysis, MATH 534: Analytic Function Theory, MATH 535: Analytic Function Theory, and MATH 536: Analytic Function Theory
    2. Algebra: MATH 520: Abstract Algebra, and MATH 521: Seminar in Abstract Algebra
    3. Geometry and Topology: MATH 545: General Topology, and MATH 571*: Fundamentals of Modern Geometry
    4. Analytic Function Theory: MATH 534: Analytic Function Theory, MATH 535: Analytic Function Theory, and MATH 53: Analytic Function Theory
    5. Applied Mathematics: MATH 550: Vector and Tensor Analysis, MATH 551: Continuum Mechanics, MATH 552: Partial Differentiation Equations: MATH 553: Differential Equations of Mathematical Physics, STAT 511: Hometry, STAT 580: Design of Surveys in Research, STAT 582: Special Topics in Statistics

      * The candidate may take MAED 570: Foundations of Mathematics as an elective course, only if he/she does not take MAED 571: Fundamentals of Modern Geometry.
  2. The candidate must complete MATH 599: Research and Thesis, by writing a thesis on a research topic chosen by the candidate and approved by the candidate's advisor.
