Education

The objective of the Education Program is to prepare its graduates for positions as professional educators in educational technology, elementary education, and special education, and for further graduate study at the advanced graduate level. It is designed to develop educational innovators who are prepared to enhance education through constructive change as well as to assist the schools in meeting the demands of a rapidly changing world. It seeks to empower professional educators through enhanced knowledge and skills. It has as an essential goal the development of effective and ethical change agents who understand the process in bringing about constructive change, the strategies needed to overcome barriers to change, and the techniques needed to work within the system to realize productive change. It seeks, also, to transform schools through the application of educational technology that will support new models of teaching and learning.

Admission Requirements

For unconditional admission, applicants must meet the general requirements of the School of Graduate Studies and the Department. Additionally, students must submit (1) a GRE aptitude score of 800 or above; (2) a written statement outlining why they wish to pursue an advanced degree in the area and their experiences; (3) three letters of professional and/or personal reference; and (4) transcripts of the last two years of undergraduate school and all graduate study. Applicants who do not meet the requirements for unconditional admission may be admitted conditionally and be required to take courses or acquire practical experience as determined in consultation with the major advisor.

Credit Requirements

Two degree options are available to students pursuing studies in Education: (1) Master of Science and (2) Master of Education. The Master of Science degree program requires a minimum of 30 semester hours; the Master of Education requires a minimum of 36 semester hours.

All requirements for the master's degree must be completed within six years from the date of initial registration in the graduate program, excluding periods of military service. Full-time students may complete the program in one academic year and a summer. Part-time students may complete the program in two years.
