DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Manage daily activities of the alternative crops research projects and experiments. Plan research activities in consultation with the supervisor, and provide assistance in coordination and prioritizing of tasks. Receive overall research assignments from the Principal Investigator (PI), and assist in the planning, design, implementation, and conducting of research experiments. Collect research data and information; manage spreadsheets for research projects; and ensure the accuracy of data test results through established methods and procedures. Maintain equipment and supply inventories. Perform basic maintenance on machinery and equipment, and make recommendations to the PI on servicing and procurement of related supplies. Assist the PI with special program events which support the Alternative Crops program activities. Prepare purchase order request, and receive supplies and equipment deliveries.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS: Considerable knowledge in the theory and practice of field and greenhouse crop production including nutrition, plant water relations, and stress physiology. Experience working in laboratories, preferably in a research setting. Demonstrated ability and experience in the design, management, and evaluation of experiments. Demonstrated ability in the usage of Microsoft Word, Excel, Access and statistical analyses programs to include the development of spreadsheets. Experience supervising and managing staff. Inventory control experience. Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing. Ability to work independently and collaboratively. Must possess a valid Virginia Driver’s License. Bachelor’s degree in agronomy, horticulture, or related field, or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: Master’s degree in agronomy, horticulture, or plant biology. Basic knowledge and practical skill in the operation and servicing of farm machinery.
