Author Visitation
To promate STEM(Science, Technology, Engineering & Mathematics) areas. An author of a current popular science book is invited to visit university classrooms where student have already read the book and discussed it with the profesores. The author in classroom visit presents topic covered in the book and answers student questions. The author later participates in a panel discussion attended by larger audience, which includes students who have read the book, educators,parents and scientists. the panel disussion covers a broader range of topic, including the current status of research in the related field.
OBJECTIVES
- To improve the retention in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering & Mathematics) areas.
- Promote reading, writing and critical thinking.
- Provide the faculty and students of Virginia State University the opportunity for personal contact with creative Authors.
- Promote Undergraduate / Graduate research.
METHOD
- A popular science book is selected by English / Science faculty.
- Book is assigned to incoming students for them to read in English 110 class.
- There are regular dicussions in the class room on the topics covered in the book.
- Projects may be assigned form the book topics. -> Speakers in the topic area of the book are invited to give seminars.
- During spring semester Author of the book is invited for a forum / panel discussion on the book.
GOALS
- Student will document his / her improved critical thinking and writing skills.
- The Programe will help to create peer to peer writing support community.
