DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Supervises and monitors the activities of police personnel as they execute their assigned duties to provide general guidance and corrective action; maintain regular radio contact with assigned personnel; inspecting campus facilities/property to ensure that police personnel have fulfilled their assigned responsibilities; and, meet with and answer complaints and concerns about police conduct and/or activities from students, staff, faculty, and visitors. Responsible for coordinating schedules of assigned personnel to ensure coverage of all regular areas of responsibility; generate regular reports on the activities of assigned personnel and forward campus Chief of Police monthly. Inspects all assigned personnel reporting for duty to ensure proper appearance in compliance with Department Standard Operating Procedures (SOP’s); coordinates special administrative matters; and responds to complaints or requests from citizens for assistance in order to protect and serve the VSU community effectively.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS: Basic knowledge of the principles and techniques of law enforcement, security, crime prevention and investigation. Ability to interpret laws, policies, and regulations governing the Police Department. Must have basic understanding of human resource management. Must have the ability to obtain certification as a Campus Police Officer as mandated by the Department of Criminal Justice Services (DCJS) within 6 months of employment. Demonstrated skill in the use of carried weapons and firearms, and other related police equipment. Ability to operate a motor vehicle safely. Must be able to function mentally and physically under stress and emergency situations. Demonstrated ability communicating effectively both verbally and in writing. Possession of a valid Virginia driver’s license with clear driving record. High school diploma or GED required. Note: Federal law prohibits a person convicted of a misdemeanor crime of domestic violence from carrying a firearm.
The selected candidate must pass a Criminal Background check, including fingerprinting, and must complete a Statement of Personal Economic Interests as a condition of employment if applicable.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: College course work in criminal justice, public administration, or related field. Supervisory experience.
