The Virginia State University Board of Visitors Charge the Presidential Search Committee to work on its behalf to identify and bring a recommended list unranked of 3 to 5 candidates who in the Committee’s judgment are well qualified to lead Virginia State University (VSU) as its next President. The Presidential Search Committee’s responsibilities and duties in carrying out this Charge are as follows:
1. To develop a profile of leadership qualities sought in the new President by soliciting input from all constituencies (Board of Visitors, Faculty, Administration, Alumni, Students and VSU communities-at-large) to guide in the search and selection process.
2. To select the search firm and work out contract and rules of engagement to guide the Search Committee and the University in the search for the new President.
3. The Search Committee must abide by all State and Federal laws including Equal Opportunity and Freedom of Information legislation and mandates and Virginia State University bylaws and policies.
4. The search may be as broad as the Search Committee working with the search firm deems necessary to achieve a successful list of candidates.
5. The committee is expected to adhere to the timeline established by the Board of Visitors, which is to have a final candidate selected and accepted by April 2010.
6. In the search process and the identification of the final list of 3 to 5 candidates, the Search Committee must:
A. Select and interview semifinalist candidates
B. Assist in checking out references of the semifinalists
C. Must arrange and oversee campus visits for finalist candidates and spouses
7. The committee must ensure that appropriate information about Virginia State University and the presidency is provided to the candidates as appropriate.
8. Strict observance of confidentiality is required through all the Search Committee deliberations and activities involving candidates to protect the prospective candidates’ privacy and dignity and the integrity of the process.
