TROJANS TAKE CIAA CHAMPIONSHIP

ETTRICK, VA-The Virginia State Trojans captured their third straight CIAA Baseball Championship with a 7-3 victory over Saint Augustine’s College Saturday afternoon (April 18) at Whaley Colbert Field.

VSU (23-24) faced an early 2-0 deficit entering their half of the 2nd inning. The Trojans then proceeded to score six runs on four hits and two Falcon errors taking a 4-run lead (6-2). Brandon Crump tripled to lead off the bottom of the 4th inning and was then driven in on a sacrifice fly by Andrew Holt for their final run of the game.

St. Augustine’s, who won the CIAA regular season despite losing to Virginia State three times during the year, scored their final run in the 7th on an RBI single by Josh Bishop (Anthione Shaw). The Falcons close out the 2009 season at 24-13 overall.

Daniel Cornett earned MVP honors after coming in to relieve starting pitcher Edrian Pinder. Cornett went 6.1 innings striking out four; He also went 1-2 at the plate with an RBI and a run scored.

The Trojans became the first CIAA team to win three consecutive Tournament titles since Norfolk State University won three in a row in 1990, 1991 and 1992.

The Championship is also VSU's 25th CIAA baseball crown, more than any other CIAA school.
