Student-Athlete Profile: J.C. Chaney
Every year, the Galaxy of Stars publishes a list of "can't miss" high school prospects.
In 2004, the list of Super Sophomores was headed up by O.J. Mayo, who went on to a stellar career for the University of Southern California and is now playing for the Memphis Grizzlies of the NBA.
At number 8, Derrick Rose is listed. Rose played at the University of Memphis, and is now playing for the Chicago Bulls.
Down on the list, at number 58, is one Junius Chaney.
Chaney is now known as J.C. Chaney, and he is in his freshman year at Virginia State University.
At VSU, Chaney is averaging 9.8 points per game for the Trojans. He scored a career-high 23 points against Johnson C. Smith University and scored 20 or more points in four other contests.
He also recorded double-doubles twice this season when he had 20 points and 13 rebounds against Saint Paul's and 15 points and 11 rebounds against Elizabeth City State University.
But on February 15, the greatest honor yet came to Chaney. On that day, the CIAA named him the 2009 CIAA Rookie of the Year. Chaney is the first Trojan to be named the CIAA Rookie of the Year since Avis Wyatt won the award in 2003.
At 6-8 and 240 lbs., Chaney is a force to be reckoned with on the court.
But he also has goals off the court.
"I want to graduate with a 4.0 grade point average," Chaney said.
And on the court?
"I want to win the CIAA and the National Championship," Chaney said.
