Student-Athlete Profile: Emily Coopwood

Emily Coopwood came onto the Virginia State University campus with lofty goals.

"I want to qualify for the NCAA National Championships in my sophomore, junior and senior years, and then win the NCAA National Championship," Coopwood said.

Coopwood, who competes for the VSU women's track team, is well on her way to meeting her goal.

The sophomore from Triangle, Va., placed second in the women's high jump at the University of Maryland Invitational on January 17 with a leap of 1.62 meters (5 ft., 3.75 in.).  The only person to better Coopwood's jump was Natoya Baird of Coppin State University, who jumped 1.68 meters.

Coopwood beat out four competitors from Division I programs and all CIAA jumpers in her second-place finish.

Coopwood is majoring in secondary education at VSU, and lists creative writing as her favorite subject.

"I want to make the Dean's List," she said.

She also lists NBA legend Michael Jordan as her favorite athlete and loves to write poetry and sing.

"My favorite athletic moment came in my junior year at Woodbridge Senior High School, when I attempted to clear 5 ft., 8 in., in the first high school meet of the season," she said.

"I want to be remembered as unique, spunky and uncomparable," she said.
