Student-Athlete Profile: Michael Johnson
He is the man from Philadelphia.
On a team which boasts 11 Virginia players, senior Michael Johnson is proud to call the City of Brotherly Love home.
Three years ago, Johnson became one of Virginia State University Head Coach Anthony Collins' first recruits. Now entering his final season, Johnson has become one of the most solid players on the Trojans.
"My biggest thrill was hitting two game-winning free throws against Saint Augustine's" Johnson wrote prior to this season.
The 6-1, 185 lb., guard averaged 6.3 points per game last season, and had 10 blocks for the Trojans.
The one thing that sets Johnson apart from a lot of players, however, is his attitude.
He knows that over 90% of all college athletes won't go pro, so he has concentrated on his Sport Management major, even interning in the VSU Sports Information Department during the off-season.
"My goal is to become successful not only with my grades, but also gaining the knowledge I need for my career," Johnson wrote.
And in "career," Johnson means the time when basketball comes to and end.
