Student-Athlete Profile: Jasmine Davis

One look at how Jasmine Davis serves, and you'll never forget her.

She throws the ball high into the air.  Just as the ball reaches it's zenith, she takes her powerful legs and lifts her 5-10 body three feet into the air.

With picture-perfect timing, Davis brings her hand over her head, and smashes it into the volleyball at just the right moment.

Forty-six times this season, the ball has landed on the opposing side without being returned.  That's 46 points by way of service aces.

All this, and Jasmine is only a freshman.

After graduating from Flint Hill High School in Oakton, Va., Davis brought her show to Virginia State University.

She immediately moved into the starting rotation, despite being a true freshman.

The results have been astounding.

Davis leads VSU in four categories:  Total Attacks, Blocks, Kills and Service Aces.

With one game left in the 2008 regular season, Davis is making a strong case for her to be named the CIAA Volleyball Rookie of the Year.  She has 171 kills, 45 blocks, 171 total attacks and 46 aces.

Her nearest competitor for the VSU blocking title is teammate Nicole Robinson, who has 25 blocks.  Davis' closest competition for the kill title is Janeeka Benson, who has 110 kills.

To put it simply, there is just no one else like her.
