Ernest Moss
Head Track & Cross-Country Coach

Ernest Moss begins his second year at the helm as the head coach of the Trojans' track & field and cross-country teams.

Joining the athletics staff just a week before his athletes returned to campus for the 2008-09 school year and just one month before his first ever cross country meet,  Moss wasted little time in establishing himself as a force in the CIAA and Division II. He continued the establish legacy that was set forth by the defending CIAA Men’s Cross Country champions by retaining the same team championship again and elevating the women’s team up to that same level, giving the Trojan women’s team it’s first CIAA team championship in cross country in school history and coaching freshman Jenna Arnold to the women’s individual champion.

This was also the first back to back championship in school history for the men as well as the first time in school history that both the men and women’s team won cross country in the same year.

Moss didn’t slow down from there, wanting to establish his men and women’s track teams nationally his teams responded having a combined total of 11 NCAA Division II automatic and provisional qualifiers throughout the indoor and outdoor seasons.

Equipped with his army of sprinters and jumpers he broke numerous school records and Moss guided his men’s team to a 14th place finish at the 2009 NCAA Division II Indoor Championships. At one point in time during the indoor season Moss had a female and male jumper to hold the #1 ranking in the Women’s Triple Jump (Aishah Mujahid) and Men’s Long Jump (Leon Hunt) at the same time. When the bus finally decided to slow down Moss’ athletes from his men and women’s teams combined for a total of four All-Americans from the NCAA Indoor and Outdoor Championships all who were Jumpers.

In the CIAA for indoor and outdoor track his team faired equally as well. Having his men’s team finishing fourth indoor respectfully just shy of third and third just three points from being runner up at the CIAA Outdoor Championships. His women’s team finished runner up at the CIAA Indoor Championships and respectfully fourth just narrowly missing third outdoors.

Prior to coming to Virginia State University Moss coached at Davidson College in North Carolina for four seasons. While at Davidson, the Wildcats were named to the Academic All-American Team for the past three years. He also coached three Southern Conference Champions and NCAA Regional Qualifiers. Under Moss, Davidson track and field athletes broke 17 school records and had the highest finish of any Davidson team at the Southern Conference Indoor and Outdoor Championships.

Before coming to Davidson, Moss was assistant track and field coach at Lafayette College in Easton, Pa., in 2003-04. While on the Lafayette staff, Moss coached seven NCAA Regional Qualifiers and his student-athletes broke seven school records. Lafayette also had the NCAA Outdoor Champion in the 100 meter dash. He also coached 42 All-Patriot League performers.

Moss also coached at Lehigh University in Bethlehem, Pa., from 2002-03. While at Lehigh, Moss coached an NCAA Regional Qualifier in the Men's Triple Jump and 24 All-Patriot League performers.

He has also coached Maryline Roux to a seventh place finish in the 400 meters and an eighth place finish in the 200 meters at the 2008 World Masters Indoor Championships. He also coached Justin Song to the semi-finals of 400 meters in the Korean Nationals in 2006 and 2007.

Moss graduated from Western Carolina University in 2000 with a Bachelor's degree in Communications/Public Relations with a minor in Marketing/ Sales and received his Master's Degree of Art and Teaching with Magna Sum Cum Laude from Sacred Heart University in 2002.

Moss is single and resides in Petersburg, VA.
