2008-09 Women's Basketball Signees

Four junior college all-stars, including a third-team All-American, have signed to continue their collegiate careers for the Virginia State University women's basketball team, VSU head women's basketball coach James Hill announced on Monday.

Angela Brown, Brittney Ivey, Leslie Phillips and Tierney Rock have all signed to join the Lady Trojans in 2008-09.

Brown, a 5-11 guard/forward from Harcum Junior College, hails from Orange, N.J., and was the National Junior College Athletic Association Player of the Year and first-team All-Region in 2006-07. She averaged 17 points and 10 rebounds per game for the Lady Bears.

Ivey, was a third-team All-American while playing for Schoolcraft Junior College in Livonia, Mich. The 5-8 guard/forward is from Detroit, Mich., and was first-team All-Conference and named Most Valuable Player of the All-Region Team. She aveaged 11 points, seven assists and 3.8 steals per game for Schoolcraft last season.

Leslie Phillips comes to VSU from Georgia Permieter Junior College, where she was named to the GJCAA Region XVII first-team All-Conference Team and was MVP of GJCAA Region XVII. The Atlanta, Ga., native averaged 12 points, six rebounds and four assists for the Jaguars in 2007-08. She turned down offers Clayton State University, Armstrong Atlantic State and Augusta State universities to come to VSU. She was 17th in the nation among Division I junior colleges in steals.

Tierney Rock, a 5-7 guard from Jacksonville, Fl., was named to the Panhandle Conference First-Team All-Conference Team and was named Offensive Player of the Year of the Panhandle Conference of the NJCAA. She averaged 20 points and eight assists for Hillsborough Community College. She chose VSU over Edward Waters College and North Florida University.

"I'm looking for these players to come in and make an impact right away," VSU Head Women's Basketball Coach James Hill said. "Each one of these players were heavily recruited by several major schools, and they chose VSU over all of them. Each player can play multiple positions and all come out of winning programs."

VSU opens the season on November 15 against Davis & Elkins College at 5:30 p.m. in Daniel Gym.
