Duties and Responsibilities: The incumbent in this position will be an integral member of the animal science multi-disciplinary team. The incumbent will conduct and assist in the dissemination of research on applied and basic aspects of small ruminant production as part of a research team. The incumbent develops innovative research program using molecular, cellular and biochemical approaches to solve problems in small ruminants leading to technology transfer, peer reviewed publications and extramural funding. Research areas include application of molecular animal genetics to improve goat resistance to parasites, diseases and other biotic stresses. The incumbent will also use genomic approach to enhance the quality, safety and therapeutic value of goat products for human consumption. Participates in the development and implementation of appropriate undergraduate and graduate programs at Virginia State University. Participates in department, school and university service and outreach activities.
Qualifications: Ph.D. degree in Animal Science with concentration in molecular genetics. Demonstrated ability to design and conduct publishable research in animal biotechnology. Must have a desire to build effective collaborative programs and complement and enhance Virginia State University’s land grant mission of teaching, research and extension. Experience with small ruminant, and a strong background in laboratory techniques. Computer and interpersonal relation skills with excellent communication (written and verbal), and the ability to work independently and collaboratively.
