VSU signs four recruits for 2008-09
Virginia State University has announced the signing of four student-athletes who will be playing their collegiate basketball for the Trojans in 2008-09.
The new Trojans are Ricardo Lipsomb, Brandon Macklin (above top), Harvey Mills III (above bottom) and Junius Chaney.
Lipscomb, a 6-0 185 lb. junior transfer from Harford Community College, attended Matoaca High School Chesterfield, Va., and led the nation in assists last season with a 12.3 assists-per-game average. He also earned All-JUCO second team honors in 2007-08.
"Ricardo is a true point guard that understands how to get his other teammates involved," VSU Head Coach Anthony Collins said. "He also has the ability to score."
Macklin, a 6-8 230 lb. forward, is transferring in from Charleston Southern University, where he helped the Buccaneers to a 10-20 record last year. Macklin played in all 30 games for CSU last season and started in 20 games. He averaged 6.5 points and four rebounds per game. Macklin attended Meadowbrook High School in Richmond, Va., where he averaged 13 points and 10 rebounds per game.
"Brandon will bring immediate help to our inside game and also plays with a lot of energy," Collins said.
Mills is a 5-10 180 lb. freshman from Highland Springs High School in Richmond, Va. He earned second-team All-Central Region honors last season for the Springers and averaged 14 points and five assists per game. Highland Springs finished 25-2 last season and 28-2 when Mills was a junior, and Mills helped lead the Springers to two State Championships. He also carries a 3.9 grade point average and is the featured speaker at Highland Spring's 2008 Graduation Ceremony.
"Harvey will play both guard positions for us because he is a very good outside shooter," Collins said.
Chaney, a 6-8 240 lb. freshman from George Washington High School in Danville, Va., was the all-time leading scorer in George Washington High School history. As a sophomore, Chaney was ranked #58 in the Top 100 Sophomores by Galaxy of Stars Magazine. He led the Eagles with 20 points and eight rebounds per game in 2007-08. He was named to the Virginia All-Star Basketball Game and was named 1st Team All State. He was also invited to the D-I Sports Aftermath Basketball Camp.
"J.C. has the ability to play inside and out in our system," Collins said.
