DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:  Patrol University to enhance safety and safeguards the lives of students, staff, and citizens of the community. Respond to calls for service and complaints of criminal and non-criminal activity. Enforce the laws of the Commonwealth and the rules and regulations of the University to maintain peace and order. Engage in community policing/crime prevention presentations for student/faculty and staff groups as requested. Perform other duties as assigned by supervisor to facilitate the needs of the department. Effectively communicate and work with internal and external customers as well as co-workers to maintain a positive working relationship. Investigate reported crimes, check crime scene, and collect and properly secure all evidence that may be pertinent to the investigation; complete appropriate paperwork when responding to calls; obtain proper data to complete reports; and assist the department’s investigators when needed. Properly prepare for court by reviewing cases for testimony and evidence presentation. Work with the Commonwealth Attorney’s Office to ensure successful prosecution of cases and to maintain a positive working relationship. 
 
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS: Must be able to function mentally and physically under stress and in emergency situations. Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively, orally and in writing. Working knowledge of law enforcement concepts.   Must be a certified Law Enforcement Officer or eligible to be certified as mandated by the Virginia Department of Criminal Justice Services. Demonstrated ability to handle to handle firearms. Possess or be eligible for a valid Virginia driver's license with a clear driving record.  Must be 18 years of age and a U.S. citizen. Must never have been convicted of a felony or crime of moral turpitude. High School diploma or GED is required. Two years of college preferred. Prior police experience is not required, but an understanding of basic law enforcement concepts and fundamentals are preferred.
 
Continued employment is contingent upon succesful compliance with mandatory training standards fo the Virginia Department of Criminal Justice Services. Selected candidate must pass a Criminal Background check, including fingerprinting and must complete a Statement of Personal Economic Interests as a condition of employment, if applicable.
