Ask Virginia State University first baseman Andrew Holt what his batting average is and he can’t tell you. He thinks it’s “bad luck to look at that stuff.” If the 6-1, 167 pound sophomore from Colonial Heights had taken a peek at the stat book heading into Saturday, he would have found that he was 15th in the nation in batting average at .486.
Holt’s approach is simple; look for fastballs and once there are two strikes in the count protect the plate.
“I try not to swing at anything off speed until I’ve got two strikes on me,” Holt said.
VSU coach Merrill Morgan called Holt a “great hitter.”
“He’s been swinging the bat well all year,” Morgan said. “He’s a good player from a good program.”
In the doubleheader Saturday agianst St. Augustine’s, Holt went 2-5 with two walks and lowered his average to .475. That’s what happens when a player is batting close to .500 on the year.
In 99 at bats, Holt has three strikeouts and an on-base percentage of .530. He leads the Trojans in hits (47), doubles (11), homeruns (3), RBI (28) and runs scored (24).
