Student-Athlete Profile: Clifton Springfield-Cobb
By Bianca Warren
Virginia State Sports Information Intern
At any Virginia State University men's basketball game, you might hear, “CSC for three” or “CSC with the steal.”
But who is CSC?
Some new defense or offense? Some new sponsor? Or new television show?
The correct answer is none of the above.
"CSC" is a person, and Clifton Springfield-Cobb is his name.
Springfield-Cobb is 6-3 business management major Freshman from Durham, North Carolina can be described by many words, but the two that define CSC the best would be heart and hustle.
With the motivation from one of his high school teachers, Cobb gave head coach Tony Collins a video, and Coach Collins gave him a chance. With this chance came one stipulation, he had to red shirt his first year.
“I never sat out when it came to basketball, but he gave me a chance so there was no way I could say no,” said Cobb, “I used red shirting as an opportunity to get better.” Cobb stated that he videotaped the games last year, but also took that time to study his team as well as the different playing styles of the opposite team.
Cobb stated that the guard position is somewhat of a challenge for him being that in high school he played a power forward, but he is working hard and by his senior year he will be a point/shooting guard. Another goal he gave himself is to be defensive player of the year.
With only four games left in the regular season Cobb’s thoughts about the tournament is simple, “The CIAA tournament is wide open. There is no one team dominating the conference,” stated Cobb, “If we focus on our goal nobody will be able to stop us, it’s not over until it’s over.”
Everyday Cobb steps on the court he plays by a particular saying, “Play every game as if it’s your last,’’ said Cobb, “ You never know what tomorrow will bring, you never know if this might be the last time you will ever dribble a ball. So each time you step foot on the court play with heart and hustle.”
