center for preventive health research on children & adolescents
Dr. Aashir Nasim, Director
The Center for Preventive Health Research on Children & Adolescents (CPHR) has as its central aim to build a research community of scholars whose primary focus is to promote contextual and cultural perspectives in the framing of prevention research on adolescents. CPHR occupies a critical space in the research discourse on developing effective prevention intervention programs for youth, in particular those from minority or disadvantaged backgrounds. Research shows that while the prevalence of certain risk behaviors (e.g., obesity, alcohol use and abuse, and tobacco use) are lowest among ethnic minority groups, children and adolescents of these groups suffer a disproportionately higher rate of disease and disorders related to such behaviors. CPHR also serves as a center for scholars in prevention, bringing together emerging as well as nationally recognized scholars in the field of prevention to engage in productive scholarly collaborations which include grantsmanship, visiting teaching and research appointments, mentoring and advising undergraduate and graduate students, and conducting community and school-based forums related to national prevention campaigns.
