ARTS 206 WATERCOLOR - 3 semester hours

I. Course description:
An introduction to the fundamentals of transparent and opaque watercolor painting techniques. Art and Design Majors Only
II. Required text: The Art of Watercolor, Revised and Expanded Edition, by Charles Le Clair, Watson-Guptill Publications, New York, ISBN 0823002926.
III. Knowledge. The student will be able to:
1. Understand watercolor terminology
2. Develop and utilize an appropriate vocabulary
3. Differentiate between aqueous and non-aqueous paintings
4. Understand the art principles and elements
5. Know the type of watercolor paper
IV. Skills. The student will be able to:
1. Create paintings using wet-on-wet technique
2. Create a graded wash
3. Execute different brush strokes
4. Create watercolor sketches
5. Compare and contrast works of art
V. Abilities. The student will be able to:
1. Create art by means of solving problems and expressing emotions.
2. Describe, analyze, interpret and evaluate works of art.
VI. Course Requirements:
1. In-class assignments will vary in focus on techniques and subject matter. There will be approximately 2 paintings due each week. Late work will not be accepted.
2. Critiques will take place at the beginning of class when assignments are due (dates to be announced. Participation is mandatory. Participation means having your work in the critique and contributing to the discussion.
3. Written research assignments will be given.
4. On time class attendance is mandatory. Each student may have up to two unexcused absences during the semester. Each unexcused absence after that will result in a reduction of the final grade for the course of five (5) points for each absence.
5. 3 lates will add up to one absence.
6. Leaving before being excused will count as an unexcused absence.
7. Use of cell phone and cell phone ringing is prohibited in the classroom.
8. Students who are covered under the American Disability Act should privately inform the teacher of this so that appropriate instructional arrangements can be made.
VII. SAFETY PROCEDURES
1. Clean up your workspace before leaving! Thoroughly wipe off any stray paint on benches, easels, floor, etc. Put all containers of medium, turpentine, kerosene, etc. in your locker in a manner that they will not spill.
2. Electrical equipment, paper cutters or mat cutters are off limits without proper instruction by the instructor.
3. Use safety goggles when using saws or chemicals.
4. Use a face mask when using sprays or chemicals.
5. Always read product labels before using.
6. Always use sprays, rubber cement, oil paint, air brush or chemicals in a well ventilated area or out doors.
7. Solvents and cleaning materials require ventilation.
8. Always store flammable spray cans in non-flammable cabinets.
9. Avoid using lead-based paint. Never allow lead-based paint to make contact with skin, eyes or mouth.
10. Dispose of chemicals, turpentine, kerosene and oil paints only in designated containers. Do not dump this material down the sink!
11. When diluting acids, always add the acid to water, never the reverse. Wear rubber gloves and goggles.
12. Make sure the blade on exacto and mat knives are always retracted or protected when not in use, even if for a short time period.
13. Extend handle when passing a tool to another person.
14. Know where first aid kits and eye washes are located.
15. Report all accidents to the instructor immediately.
VIII. SUPPLIES for ARTS 206 (see p. 19 in text)
Tubes of watercolor with a minimum of the following colors: Cadmium red, alizarin crimson, cadmium yellow, yellow ochre, cerulean blue, French ultramarine blue, viridian green, chrome oxide green, raw umber, Paine's gray
PAPER: You will use at least 2 sheets per week: White watercolor paper pad, size 18" x 24" and Several sheets of watercolor cold pressed and hot pressed paper (140 pound weight, size 22" x 30") - optional for non-art majors
Drawing pencils, HB, 2B
Kneaded eraser and non-staining white vinyl or art gum eraser
Pencil sharpener
Drawing pen and drawing ink (such as India ink)
Container for water (large jar, can or plastic container
Spray bottle for water
Drawing board at least as large as your paper and risers such as a brick or small can
Clamp spot light with 150 watt bulb
A variety of watercolor brushes to include a 1" flat brush, about a 1 ¾" flat brush, sable round brushes #6 or #8, #14 or #16, and #01 or #001.
A medium size bamboo brush is also useful.

Masking liquid-rubber
One or two large square or rectangular sponges
Toothbrush
Soft rag or Turkish towel
Masking or drafting tape
Ruler and compass
Portfolio for carrying your paintings
