VSU-RIMI Program Overview
The mission of the National Center on Minority Health and Health Disparity (NCMHD) is to support programs that reduce and ultimaley eliminate health disparity by funding research in the areas of biomedical and other sciences. Within the NCMHD, Research Infrastructure in Minority Institutions (RIMI) program seeks to strengthen the integration of research and teaching at predominantly minority serving academic institutions. The ultimate aims of the RIMI program in reducing health desparities incude facilitating faculty preparedness and readiness to conduct research, enhance student competencies and preparedness to pursue an advanced degree, promote educational experience that encourages students and faculty to pursue biomedical careers, and to build an academic infrastructure that fosters innovative research and education training.
The purpose of the funded RIMI program at Virginia State University is to augment and strengthen the infrastructure and capacity of VSU to conduct basic biomedical research aimed at addressing and ultimately eliminating health disparities, developing infrastructure to enhance reasearch at VSU, infuse innovative educational experiences to students and faculty, expose faculty and students to cutting-edge biomedical research, and through collaborations enhance minority faculty/student participation in biomedical research. Accordingly, VSU-RIMI program objectives are:
- To build research capacity for biomedical research at VSU.
- To promote the participation of faculty and students in biomedical and behavioral research, and
- To enhance academic programs in biomedical sciences and health disparities.
