A town of just over 10,000 people in south central Virginia may have produced the most prominent rebounder that Viginia State University's women's basketball team has seen in several years.

A junior transfer from Ruther Glen, Va., Salita Childs is extremely excited about the 2007-2008 basketball season.

And her excitement is showing on the court.  Childs is averaging 6.2 rebounds per game for the Lady Trojans, and has twice pulled down nine boards in a game this season.

Ever since Childs was young, she was always surrounded by basketball.

Her uncle was the first to get her into the game by teaching her as well as her sister and cousins.

Childs transferred from Catawba College, where she worried that she was losing the passion for the game due to the lack of playing time.

However once she put on the orange and blue of Virginia State, her confidence level began to rise.

"I feel priveledged playing basketball at Virginia State," she said.  "I love it here because it is a new opportunity, a good environment, and the team is like one big family."

Reminiscing about past basketball experiences, Childs brought up her most memorable moment, reaching 1,000 point in her high school career.

But not living in the past, Childs spoke on her goal for the 2007-2008 season. Childs will like to finish this season with a winning record and a CIAA championship ring.

"I can do all things through Christ, who strenghtens me," reads the tattoo that Childs has on her arm.

She believes that, "If you believe and have Him on your side, you can do anything!"
