Student-Athlete Profile: Jade Austin
Determination
Dedication
Heart
Pride
These four things junior Jade Austin possess on and off the volleyball court.
Austin's career began in her sophmore year of high school. Not taking volleyball seriously until her junior year, Austin made the junior olympic team two years in a row.
When it came time to choose a college, Austin's father pushed her in Virginia State University's direction, but it was Virginia State's psychology program that brought her here.
As a freshman she made the CIAA All-Rookie team and the VSU Rookie of the Year.
Although having a good start, Austin redshirted her sophomore year due to grades.
"Watching my team play without me was truly devestating, but I used it as a learning experience. I learned that academics does come first," Austin said.
This season Austin made the CIAA All Tournament Team. She had 33 kills in the Lady Trojans three volleyball matches during the 2007 CIAA Volleyball Tournament.
Austin had 12 kills against Livingstone, 11 kills and seven service aces against Saint Paul's, and 10 kills against Fayetteville State University.
"I was really shocked because out of all the talented girls on the team, I was the only one to make the all tournament team," said Austin.
Austin is very anxious about next season. She stated that this season was a lot better than previous seasons, but next season they will win the CIAA tournament. "The team chemistry still remains and will get better." " Go hard or go home. When you put your heart on the floor and play your hardest, there is no reason to end up with a lost." Austin stated.
