I. Course Description

Silkscreen Procedures deals with those specifications that are basic to this printing technique. It is, first and foremost, a stencil process. The three (3) most common methods of stencil making are: 1) cut film, 2) photographic film, 3) the touche and glue method. A feeling out process may be initiated via the paper stencil process. The touche and glue method may be extended into serigraphy, which may be more relative to fine arts methodology.

II. Course Objectives

When completed, the student will be able to:

1. Build a simple screen for printing.
2. Make a simple paper stencil and print.
3. Clean and prepare the screen for printing.
4. Define and understand terminology pertinent to printmaking via the silkscreen process.
5. Properly register material (paper, cloth, etc.) for printing.
6. Cut stencils from film (microfilm).
7. Use emulsion for the screen and properly expose.
8. Adhere film.
9. Apply emulsion.
10. Print using a squeegee.
11. Expose a screen using photographic procedures.

III. Course Requirements

A. The responsibility for meeting the requirements of this course is the student's.
B. The student's participation in the course work is a primary precondition for receiving credit for the course. Non-participation in class critiques and discussions can result in the lowering of the student's grade.
C. A student is expected to contribute to, as well as receive from, the class. Thus, his/her presence is important.
D. All students are expected to attend classes regularly and to be punctual. The instructor is not obligated to give makeup class activities to students who are absent without a valid excuse. Absences for any reasons do not relieve the student of the responsibility for satisfying course requirements.
E.Class attendance is counted from the first day that class begins. A student who registers late will have attendance counted from the first day of the regularly scheduled class and not from the date of the late registration.
F. "I" represents incomplete course work and is reported when 1) the student has an excused absence from the final examination; or 2) the student has not completed the course requirements due to an 'Act of God'.
G. All assignments must be completed in an acceptable and professional manner.
H. All work on the assignments must be done in the art studio. No work will be accepted that the instructor has not seen or approved. Permission must be obtained from the instructor to work on assignments outside the art studio.
I. Work is determined late after the end of class period in which it is due. The penalty for late work is one (1) letter grade lost per day for each day the work is late. Work will not be accepted after five (5) calendar days late. No Exceptions.
J. No work will be accepted after the end of the last class period for the course. No Exceptions.
K. All work must be submitted to the instructor, unless otherwise advised. Do not leave work in the Art Office or with anyone other than the instructor. Credit will not be given for work left that does not follow the directions for submission.
L. All work must be original. Each student must do his/her own work. No copying, such as cartoon characters, is permitted.
M. Each student must furnish materials and tools for his/her projects.
N. Each student is expected to take the initiatve to research each project or assignment, seeking information from books and periodicals.
O. Students will be notified at least one (1) day in advance of any examination or critique. Under no circumstances will students be permitted to make up unannounced quizzes. Make-up tests and examinations will be given at the discretion of the instructor. Medical reasons require a written excuse from a doctor or hospital indicating that you were unable to attend that day. If you miss a major examination or test for a reason that is acceptable to the instructor, you will be required to make it up at a time that is convenient for the instructor.
P. Students missing an examination or test must notify the instructor in writing within 24 hours following the examination or test. You must have an acceptable excuse.
Q. Students missing an examination or test without an excused absence will receive a zero (0), which will be averaged into the total grade.
R. Each student is responsible for class materials. Expalanations and demonstrations will not be repeated.
S. All work must be clearly labeled with the student's name, course name and number, course section, date, and any other information required to receive credit for the work. This information must be written on the work or attached as specified by the instructor.
T. Credit will be given for each day's work in the class during the regular class period. Each day the student does not work in class the student will receive zero (0) credit for the day.
