Acceptable Use Policy
Virginia State University information technology resources, including the wireless network, are for the use of persons currently affiliated with Virginia State University, including faculty, staff, and students. The university provides information technology resources to further the university’s mission of instruction, research, extension, and public service. Use of these resources should be consistent with this mission and this policy.
Acceptable use of Virginia State University information technology resources should be based on common sense, common decency, academic honesty, and a showing of restraint in the consumption of shared resources. Acceptable use will also demonstrate respect for an individual’s right to privacy and to freedom from intimidation and harassment.

Guidelines
Unacceptable uses of University resources include, but are not limited to, the following:
• Using the resources for any purpose, which would be in violation of applicable local, State, or Federal laws.
• Using the resources for commercial, sales, or advertising purposes without University approval
• Attempting to evade, disable, or “crack” passwords or other security provisions of systems on the network.
• Using some else’s identity and password for access to information technology resources.
• Using the resources to transmit harassing, abusive, or intimidating materials.
• Making use of illegal copies of copyrighted materials or software, storing such copies on university systems, or transmitting them over university networks
• Engaging in any activity that might be purposely harmful to University systems or to any information stored thereon, such as creating or propagating viruses, disrupting services, damaging files, or making unauthorized modifications to university data.
• Wasting of computing or networking resources, for example, by printing excessively, or by sending chain letters or unsolicited mass mailings.
Enforcement
Access to the information technology environment at Virginia State University is a privilege and must be treated as such by all users of these systems. Depending on the seriousness of an offense, violation of the policy can result in penalties ranging from a reprimand, to loss of access privileges, to a referral to university authorities for disciplinary or legal action. In cases where unacceptable use severely impacts performance or security, the Office of Information Technology will immediately suspend an individual’s access privileges.
