 Dr. Valery Yvonne Rose Bates-Brown has been employed at Virginia State University (VSU) for 28 years. In 1981 she began as an instructor and over the years advanced to full professor with tenure in Visual Communications (Graphic Design) in the Department of Art and Design. Over the years, she has served VSU as a full faculty member and/or with a reduced course load so that she could serve as a fulltime administrator. In Fall 2009 she returned to the department to teach a full course schedule. She is a professor for digital photography and a variety of other graphic design courses and technological applications. She has published and presented at conferences, programs, and meetings. She uses standard Microsoft and Adobe products for Windows and Mac computer technology. At VSU and in her professional career, she serves on a variety of academic, technology, and online instruction committees. She is a leader, professor, team player, organizer, project manager, initiator, implementer, and more. Her Ph.D. is in Mass Communications from Howard University. Her BFA and MFA are from Virginia Commonwealth University.

She is the past Assistant Vice President for Academic Support Services at Virginia State University. Throughout her career, she has been a responsible leader for implementing new programs. One proposal became the Academic Support Center, 1997 to 2009. In 2009 the Academic Support Center was reorganized into Academic Success and changed from the Academic Affairs division to the Student Affairs division. As a leader and team member, she is a visionary whom continues to be involved in working with all divisions of the university.

Throughout the years Dr. Bates-Brown's leadership has been inclusive of the following areas: Student success, student retention, student matriculation for graduation, curriculum development and updates, university and program accreditation, general education, student support services, Freshman and the overall campus student population, National Student Exchange Program, New Student Orientation Program, Stay in Step Intergenerational Program (A tutoring, mentoring, and advising program), Undeclared Majors Advisement Program, Veteran Affairs Advisement, International Student Advisement, Absentee Notification from class, Withdrawal from the University, General Counseling services, and Trio Programs - Student Support Services, Upward Bound, and Talent Search. 

In the classroom and in her leadership roles, she practices quality education, supportive education, and equal education. She is an advocate for student success because this is the nature of how she carries out her work. In addition, she has received the VSU Outstanding Faculty Award for distinguished teaching and professional services to students and the overall University for 1997 – 1998. She is also a recipient of the First-Year Student Advocate Award for 2003 from the National Resource Center for the First-Year Experience. And, the Richmond Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. awarded her the Educator of the Year Award in 1996.

She has exhibited her creative artwork yearly in group art exhibitions.She has exhibited in a one-woman art exhibit, which consisted of computer graphics, black and white as well as color photography, acrylic paintings, drawings, and prints.

Dr. Bates-Brown is a diligent worker who is committed to educational endeavors for all mankind. Her personal interests include living a healthy lifestyle and giving to others. She lives in Richmond, Virginia and is married.
